Hemp seed can be a great addition to various dishes, whether you’re cooking or baking. Not only do they add an earthy, nutty twist, they’re also packed full of beneficial amino and fatty acids. With a little bit of know-how and some basic equipment, you could be adding hemp seeds to your dishes in no time! So how do you cook hemp seeds? Read on for a full explanation and a few tips and tricks.
Why cook hemp seeds?
Flavor. Incorporating cooked hemp seed into your dishes can bring a wonderfully nutty flavor that has been described as a cross between pine nuts and sunflower seeds. If you follow a gluten-free diet, they can even be used as a substitute for breadcrumbs!
Cooking hemp seeds lifts their flavor profile just enough to make them a more central ingredient instead of just a garnish. The salt intensifies the flavors already present, and the cooking process softens them just enough to ensure you’re not picking them out of your teeth for days to come.

Equipment and Ingredients:
- 16 oz hemp seed
- 1 tsp salt
- Bowl for soaking seeds
- Cooking pot, for boiling water
- Storage container for leftover seeds
- Presoak your hemp seeds by placing your seeds in the bowl with at least a 3 times water to hemp seed ratio, and allow to soak for 24 hours.
- After 24 hours, check your seeds. Any sediment and silt should now have rested at the bottom of the bowl and your seeds should have just begun to split.
- Decant the hemp seeds and water into your boiling pot. This can be tricky but pour slowly so that the silt and sediment stay in the bowl.
- Add the salt and bring the water slowly to a boil
- Reduce the heat to a simmer, and allow the seeds 20-30 minutes. Once the majority of the seeds have split, you’re getting close to ready!
- Remove the pot from the heat and strain the seeds. Spread the seeds out on a flat surface covered with paper towels to cool and dry.
- Once dried and cooled, use the container to store your seeds for future use- the refrigerator works best.
