What is a CBD Tincture?

You’ve decided to jump into the world of hemp flower CBD. However, you’ve discovered that it’s a big world filled with all types of products. You’ve also discovered that there is more than one way to consume CBD. One of the most popular types of products is CBD tinctures. What are CBD tinctures, and how do they work?

Simply put, a CBD tincture is a liquid form of CBD. Most tinctures come in a vial with a built-in dropper that allows you to take a small, carefully measured quantity. You can take the tincture by itself in tiny doses (usually under the tongue) or combine it with food or beverages. The most popular CBD strains in tinctures are CBD full-spectrum and CBG (Cannabigerol).

How Are CBD Tinctures Produced?

Tinctures are produced by steeping cannabis flowers or isolates in high-proof grain alcohol, then applying low heat for a specified period. This method allows the active compounds in cannabis to infuse into a neutral spirit, much of which is then boiled off.

The result is a liquid oil that delivers the same effects of the cannabinoid molecules as smoking. Producers often add carrier oils and other complementary ingredients, such as orange oil, to improve the taste of the tincture. The entire solution is bottled, along with additional ingredients for flavor or specific benefits.

How to Take CBD Tinctures

CBD tincture is highly concentrated. Therefore, you should take it in small doses. The built-in dropper allows you to take small, carefully measured quantities instead of sipping the tincture straight from the vial. If you swallow your tincture, you can expect to feel effects within 1–2 hours and for effects to last upwards of 5–6 hours.

Since doses are small, there are several ways to take CBD tinctures. For instance, you can mix your dose with your meal. You can also mix it with any beverage. If you choose to take a CBD tincture by itself, you need to drop it under your tongue so that it can absorb into your nervous system quickly. In some cases, you can apply CBD oil directly to your skin. Speak with a specialist or your doctor to determine the best way to use a CBD tincture.

Are CBD Tinctures the Same as CBD Oil?

Since CBD oil and CBD tinctures are liquids, it’s easy to assume they are the same product. However, there are some distinct differences that you need to know before purchasing either oil or tinctures.

For instance, CBD oil is a blend of CBD extract and oils like medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) coconut oil. By contrast, a CBD tincture is an alcohol-based extract. High-proof alcohol is used as a solvent to extract the natural compounds of the plant. It’s also used in the finished product.

So, the biggest difference is the production process and the base ingredient.

How to Choose the Right CBD Tincture

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesn’t regulate the CBD industry. Therefore, you must find products that are safe and effective. You also need to know which ingredients are in your tincture. No matter what kind of CBD product you’re considering, it’s important to find a reputable CBD manufacturer that provides current and comprehensive certificates of analysis (COA) for all of their products.

When shopping for CBD tinctures, consider the following qualities:

Potency

The amount of CBD and THC listed on the COA. It should match the amount that’s listed on the label. Batches can vary, so it may not be an exact match. But if it’s off by more than 10 to 20 percent, it may be best to choose a different product.

Cannabinoid Profile

There are three main CBD profiles.

  1. Full-spectrum products contain a small amount of THC.
  2. Broad-spectrum products shouldn’t contain THC, but they may contain other cannabinoids, like cannabigerol (CBG) or cannabinol (CBN)) and terpenes.
  3. CBD isolate products should contain CBD only.

Contaminants

Check that the product has been tested for heavy metals, pesticides, and molds.

COA or Manufacture Date

Look for a recent COA. It shouldn’t be more than a year old. Some brands will even provide COAs for each batch of products they sell.

In addition to selecting a brand that provides COAs, it’s important to look for a company that’s transparent about its hemp sources (organic, U.S.-grown hemp is best) and its manufacturing practices.
